Squalen Bulletin of Marine and Fisheries Postharvest and Biotechnology

Squalen publishes original and innovative research to provide readers with the latest research, knowledge, emerging technologies, postharvest, processing and preservation, food safety and environment, biotechnology and bio-discovery of marine and fisheries. The key focus of the research should be on marine and fishery and the manuscript should include a fundamental discussion of the research findings and their significance. Manuscripts that simply report data without providing a detailed interpretation of the results are unlikely to be accepted for publication in the journal.

Abstract

Fucoxanthin pigment is a potential compound in nutraceutical. It is commonly found in algaesuch as in Turbinaria sp.,a very abundant species in Indonesian coastal. To maximize theproduction of fucoxanthin for the development of nutraceutical industry in the coastal area, it isimportant to identify the optimal environmental parameters for its biosynthesis. It has been reportedthat nitrogen and or phosphate nutrients affect the growth of algae. Therefore, this paper aimed toobtain an optimal environment for Turbinaria sp. to produce fucoxanthin based on correlationanalysis. Correlated data were fucoxanthin isolated from Turbinaria sp.that was collected fromKrakal (Yogyakarta) and Binuangeun (Banten) coasts. Fucoxanthin contents in each sample werecompared based on the peak areas in chromatogram after 1 mg injection of n-hexane extract ofT. decurrrens in the HPLC system. The analysis results showed that the peak areas of fucoxanthinwere significantly different among sampling locations (P = 7.99 x 10-6), sampling periods (P = 6 x10-3) and interaction of both (P = 3 x 10-3). Whereas the correlation analysis revealed that interactionbetween phosphate and temperature could be a predictor that strongly (R = 0.986) and significantlycorrelated (P = 1.09 x 10-7) with the peak areas of fucoxanthin (R2= 96.5%). These results were inline with growth limiting factor in seawater and the function of fucoxanthin as ultraviolet protector.Based on these results, it is suggested that the suitable location for fucoxanthin production is in thearea of agricultural run-off that contains an elevated concentration of dissolved phosphate.

Abstract

Salt is one of the most important food materials for human life. Although the total consumptionof salt increases every year, the total production decreases. Salt, in Indonesia and other tropicalcountries, is manufactured by using total crystallization system with poor quality and low quantity.The shortcomings in salt production are its low productivity and the function alteration of salt farms.Improving the quality of salt needs to be done, for example by improving technology, qualitymanagement system, trainings, and equipments. Whereas its quantity could be improved byintensification and extensification. Salt is an industrial product and an important material for otherindustries. Fish processing industry, both traditional and modern, uses salt as product processingaid. Salt preserves flavour and enhances the appearance and texture of fish meat. Salt is used intraditional processing industries, to produce dried fish, boiled fish, and fermented fish products.Whereas in modern processing industry, salt is used for the manufacture of surimi products and itsderivatives.

Abstract

In an effort to reduce environmental pollution, edible film chitosan has been developed recentlyto maximize the utilization of shrimp waste and to promote the use of environmentally friendlypackaging. Chitosan is obtained through the process of deproteination, demineralization,depigmentation, and deacetylation of chitin. The next phase is dissolving chitosan in acid solventwith addition of plasticizer, followed by printing and drying. Edible chitosan film is applied as acoating on fresh fruits, meat products, sausages and other food products. The advantages ofedible chitosan film is its biodegradability, edibility, and anti microbial activity.

Abstract

Chitosan has wide ranges of potential applications and Indonesia possesses abundant rawmaterial sources such as crab and shrimp shells to produce it. Chitosan have beneficial properties,i.e. biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic and inexpensive. Nowadays, several experimentson the preparation of chitosan into nanoparticles and its utilization as drug delivery for varioustargeted therapies have been conducted. Chitosan nanoparticles can be prepared using variousmethods, e.g. emulsion cross-linking, precipitation, spray drying, emulsion-droplet coalescencemethod, ionic gelation, reverse micellar method and polyelectrolyte complex. Applications ofchitosan nanoparticles as drug delivery can be performed through diverse administrations includingparenteral, peroral and ocular, non-viral gene delivery vectors, vaccine delivery, and photodynamictherapy.

Abstract

Dietary fiber is one of the most essential food component, mainly used to maintain health andbalance of digestive system. Dietary fiber plays an important role in health, especially in reducingblood cholesterol, improving glucose absorbtion for diabetic patients, preventing colon cancer,and reducing weight. Several studies showed that seaweed is a potential source of dietary fiberwith more advantages compare to that of land-based crops. Contrary to its production, seaweedconsumption in Indonesia is relatively low. To date, dietary fiber intake for the majority of Indonesiansis fulfiled from land-based crops.
